“We are humbled and honored to support local organizations like The Other Way, which plays a crucial role in addressing hunger at the community level, ensuring families receive the resources they need right where they live,” said Melissa Conway, Director of Community Partnerships & Giving at Meijer. “Supporting these organizations is essential to strengthening our neighborhoods and creating lasting change. Thank you, Lilia, for helping us extend our commitment to enriching lives in the communities we serve.”
Vu chose The Other Way Ministries because the organization supports a key neighborhood in the Grand Rapids community. The pantry was also a highlight for LPGA Pro Brittany Lang, who visited the pantry with Meijer Executive Chairman Hank Meijer during the week of the 2024 Meijer LPGA Classic.

The Other Way Ministries offers food, clothes and support for many Grand Rapids families.
Hank told us their goal is to raise $2 million at this year’s LPGA tournament to support The Other Way Ministries and other organizations wanting to provide food for those who need it.
“You can love golf, but we wouldn’t be putting on a golf tournament for its own sake. We’re doing it because there are people who need to eat; we’re in the business of supplying food,” says Hank. “If we can help meet that serious need in our community, Simply Give is the way to go.”
“The fact that we can play golf and have a great event and they can grow that money at Simply Give with Meijer for The Other Way Ministries is amazing to keep helping families,” says Lang.
This week, some of the nation’s best golfers will be competing in West Michigan for the Meijer LPGA Classic. It’s not just about golf, but helping families in need.

This afternoon, Meijer Executive Chairman Hank Meijer and LPGA pro Brittany Lang toured the pantry at The Other Way Ministries and had a chance to ask questions and see the work that’s being done.
Scott Bloem, executive director of The Other Way Ministries said the organization has been seeing a large number of people come through, especially in the last couple of years.
“Four to five years ago we saw around 150 families come through every month, and in 2023, we saw over 10,000 household come through, that’s over 900 a month, that’s sixfold increase,” said Bloem.

“It is getting worse. We had to implement some measures to reduce the number of people who are coming into the pantry,” Bethany Joseph, director of food and resources at The Other Way Ministries which is located on the Westside of Grand Rapids, said. “So during the pandemic, we were actually seeing everybody once a week and slowly over time we have had to decrease the frequency we’re seeing people because we just can’t keep up.”
Joseph told News 8 that the month before the government shutdown in 2020, their organization served about 150 families a month. In October of this year, they saw record numbers and served more than 1115 families.
