Reading WORKS | Summer 2017

September 5, 2017

Community Development, Family Development, General

For five weeks this summer, families with elementary-aged children gathered at The Other Way Ministries to READ! From June 19 – July 27, families attended Reading WORKS Monday through Wednesday mornings, with a field trip each Thursday. Reading WORKS is focused on reading retention and improvement, as well as empowering parents to be a part of their child’s literacy.

Each week this summer had a theme and a corresponding field trip:

Week 1: Fitness | Rebounderz

Week 2: Animals | Boulder Ridge Animal Park

Week 3: Plants | Frederick Meijer Gardens

Week 4: Nutrition | Dairy Discovery Farm and Downtown Market Cooking Class

Week 5: Michigan | Tunnel Park Beach and Picnic

Monday through Wednesday mornings, students – along with their parent and volunteers – worked on sight words, read grade-appropriate books, played word games, and completed activities related to that week’s themed vocabulary words. At the end of each week, students were given a vocabulary assessment; they did extremely well on these assessments, with the cumulative average score being 90%!

As a part of participating fully in the Reading WORKS program, parents receive the incentive of a rent or utility voucher to recognize the significant time it takes to attend the program.

This summer, 8 families (18 children) completed the program! All participating students either maintained their reading level (11% of students) or improved by a reading level (89%). Great work everyone!

A special thanks to all the volunteers and Keystone Community Church who helped to make this possible!
