Y.E.S. | Youth Employment Service Program 2017
September 6, 2017
We’ve finished another summer of the Y.E.S. Program! After more than three decades, our summer program dedicated to youth employment is still going strong.
This summer, our Y.E.S interns, Matt and Tim, hired ten students to participate in the 10 week program. These students, ranging in age from 14 to 17 and representing 8 different high schools, committed their summer to learning job skills, exploring opportunities for their futures, building relationships, and earning a paycheck!
The normal work schedule for Y.E.S. was Tuesdays from 8 am – 1 pm, Wednesdays from 8 am – 2 pm, and Thursdays from 8 am – 1 pm. During this time, youth employees maintained 26 regular customers and completed odd jobs, which included landscaping, yard maintenance, outdoor cleanup, and cleaning.
When not working, the interns took youth employees on a variety of field trips to build relationships and expose youth to new experiences. They visited John Ball Zoo, the Planetarium at the Public Museum, SkyZone, the Michigan State Capitol, Western Michigan University College of Aviation, and Michigan’s Adventure.
Youth employees also participated in a daily bible study, and talked about the process of applying for colleges, the importance of a good resume, interview skills, student loans and scholarships, and different job markets.
